Easy DIY Hand Sanitizer Using Essential Oils
Learn how to make this easy diy hand sanitizer at home using common household ingredients and essential oils

This month I wanted to focus on some things our family is doing to boost our immune system and be proactive with our health.
So today I am sharing with you guys my easy diy hand sanitizer recipe!
All of our local stores are completely sold out of things like hand sanitizer and soaps right now as people prepare in fear over the latest viral outbreak. It’s really rather alarming.
Unfortunately, store bought hand sanitizers and soaps are filled with harsh toxic chemicals. These harmful ingredients actually effect our immune system in a negative way. theycontributing to the growth of super bugs. The reason is because while these products do remove harmful bacteria, it also removes the good beneficial bacteria that aids our bodies and environment in killing the bad stuff. So eventually what we are left with are tiny super bugs that have become immune to germ killing products. This is not good.

However there is a way to combat against unwanted germs without swiping the bacteria we actually need for proper immune function. Using essential oils that contain anit-viral and anti-bacterial properties accomplishes just that.
I think essential oils get a bad rep sometimes for being some hippy gimmick, but science (and testimony) has proven time and time again the outstanding benefits of essential oils. We have seen the benefits in our own lives as well. Essential oils are a powerhouse formula for so many things.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO MAKE HAND SANITIZER
What I love so much about this recipe is that it isn’t complicated. It doesn’t require a lot of ingredients, a lot of time or any expensive oils. This recipe uses just 2 essential oils that are included in Young Living’s starter kit. So if you’re new to Young Living, on a tight budget or still unsure how to use your oils, this is a great place to start. If you don’t have a starter kit yet, you can grab one here.
So the ingredients needed for this Easy DIY Hand Sanitizer are:
- 10 Drops of Thieves Essential Oil
- 5 Drops of Lemon Essential Oil
- 100% Pure Aloe Vera Gel
- 1tsp Witch Hazel
- 1oz Squeeze Bottle
Note* This recipe makes a 1oz bottle of hand sanitizer. Adjust recipe accordingly depending on how much you want to make.
BENEFITS OF THIEVES ESSENTAIL OIL
The benefits of Thieves essential oil almost seem endless. In terms of immune support and wellness, this one is a top contender for me. It is anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, and anti-viral.
It is perfect for cleaning your home, cleansing the air, treating wounds, improving digestion and relieving pain. Multi-purpose is an understatement.
BENEFITS OF LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL
Lemon oil is fabulous for boosting your immune system. It does this by stimulating the formation of white blood cells that fight again many diseases and infections.
Lemon oil is also very high in anti-oxidants which fight against free radicals in the body. Free radicals are environmental factors that weaken our immune system and contribute to cancer cells in the body.
Lemon oil is also great for improving digestion, detoxing the body, relieving asthma, improving the appearance of skin, reducing a fever, and also disinfecting.
HOW TO MAKE HAND SANITIZER
Again this is super easy you guys. This is a great recipe to let the kids help with to get them working with oils.
To make your hand sanitizer, start by filling your bottle nearly to the top with aloe vera gel. Leave about a half inch of space at the top for your remaining ingredients.
Next add 1tsp of witch hazel to the bottle, followed by 10 drops of Thieves and 5 drops of Lemon. Shake well for about 15-20 seconds to fully combine ingredients.

CAN I USE OTHER ESSENTIAL OILS TO CHANGE THE SCENT?
Yes, absolutely! You can always change the scent (and the benefits) of this recipe. The possibilities are endless.
WHY IS THERE NO ALCOHOL IN THIS RECIPE?
Rubbing alcohol can be very irritating to the skin. It causes dry skin and it can be harmful when inhaled. Witch hazel is a great all natural replacement.
WHERE CAN I GET ESSENTIAL OILS?
There are so many brands out there and some can even be found at your local grocery store. However, many brands that claim to be “100% pure” aren’t actually pure at all. The FDA only mandates that a company use 10% pure essential oils in the ingredients to earn the title “pure” on their label. That means they can fill the rest with synthetic fragrance and harmful chemicals.
So when choosing a brand of essential oils, be sure to do your research. We love Young Living oils and have trusted them for years. You can learn more about Young Living’s “Seed to Seal” process on their website.
